Earth Artefact
Role: Lead Motion and Interactive Design
Client: University of Huddersfield
Brief
Using The Golden Record as a base, provide an interactive design.
Context
Pioneers 10 and 11, which preceded Voyager, both carried small metal plaques identifying their time and place of origin for the benefit of any other spacefarers that might find them in the distant future. With this example before them, NASA placed a more ambitious message aboard Voyager 1 and 2, a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record, a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.
Using that as context I used the time capsule from a issues in our current nstural climate, keeping a record of the natural resources we once had before they were devoured by society and artificial lifestyle finally dominated the earth.
3D Elements
Having never used Cinema4D before, this task was quite a challenge but through patience and numerous tutorials I managed to model the objects displayed for my animation/hologram.
Hologram Placement
For is to project on the hologram box, the animation needed to be 4-sided.
Hologram Box Making
The Perfect Triangle
I needed to find a shape in which the hologram would be projected. From the numerous shapes I chose the triangle and then it was the task of seeing whether the three-sided or four-sided triangle would be a better choice. As seen the four-sided pyramid was the champion.
Box Measurements
The box was measurement were created in illustrator using my phone as the guide which would project the hologram.
Mockups
The final mock-up for the hologram before the measurements get sent to the laser printing.
Behind The Scenes on Building the Final Hologram
Behind the scenes of how the hologram was created.
Final Outcome
The finished product showcased the 3D animation inside the hologram. If I could take this project further I would have liked to see how to manage this in a wider scale than a tiny hologram box.
